Category Global WHO Standard (kg/m²) Asian / Singapore Standard (kg/m²) Health Risk / Notes
Underweight < 18.5 < 18.5 Possible nutritional deficiency or low muscle mass
Healthy / Normal Weight 18.5 – 24.9 18.5 – 22.9 Generally healthy range for most adults

Obese (High Risk) ≥ 30.0 ≥ 27.5 Higher risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases

*Asian cut-offs are recommended by the World Health Organization and Health Promotion Board (HPB) Singapore because Asian populations face higher health risks at lower BMI values.

What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple health indicator that relates your weight to your height.

It’s calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by the square of your height (in metres).

BMI helps estimate whether a person falls into a general weight category such as underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese.

(Note*Although BMI doesn’t measure body fat directly, it provides a quick snapshot of your overall body composition and is often used as a first step in assessing health risks linked to weight.)

How BMI Is Used in Physiotherapy

In physiotherapy, BMI is often used as part of a baseline health assessment to guide treatment and exercise planning.
A physiotherapist may use your BMI to:

  • Tailor exercise intensity and rehabilitation goals to your body type.

  • Identify potential joint or posture stress, especially if excess weight increases load on the spine, hips, or knees.

  • Monitor progress in weight-related physiotherapy programs (e.g. post-injury recovery, chronic pain management, or metabolic rehabilitation).

  • Collaborate with other health professionals, using BMI as one of several markers of general fitness and health status.

It’s important to remember that BMI is only one piece of the puzzle. Physiotherapists also consider factors such as muscle mass, mobility, age, and overall function to create a complete, personalised treatment plan.
